Autumn Exfoliation Myths: What Your Skin Actually Needs
Dele

When cooler weather arrives and skin feels rough, it is tempting to reach for a scrub more often. But roughness and dryness are not the same thing. If your skin is already uncomfortable, doing more is not always better. Here are five common beliefs worth looking at again.
Myth 1: Flaky skin always needs a scrub
Flakes can appear because skin is dry and needs moisture. Removing them with friction may temporarily change the way the surface looks without addressing the dryness itself. If your skin is tight, itchy or stinging, give it a break from exfoliation and reach for a suitable moisturiser first.
Myth 2: More pressure gives better results
A physical exfoliant does not need vigorous rubbing. Too much friction can leave skin red and irritated. Gentle pressure and following the product instructions are more sensible than repeatedly scrubbing an area to make it feel completely smooth.
Myth 3: Everyone should exfoliate the same number of times
There is no universal schedule. The ideal approach varies by skin type, tolerance and the product used. After shaving, sunburn, irritation or a change in your skin condition, you may need to pause. We covered practical frequency guidance in our autumn exfoliation article. This time, the message is simple: your skin's comfort matters more than a number on the calendar.
Myth 4: Every bump is a buildup of dead skin
Bumps can have different causes, including ingrown hairs and keratosis pilaris. They do not all respond to scrubbing. Rubbing inflamed or painful bumps can make them worse. Read our body texture guide for more context, and speak with a healthcare professional if bumps are painful, spreading or persistent.
Myth 5: You must exfoliate before moisturising
Moisturiser works without a scrub. You can care for your body simply by washing gently and applying a moisturiser after bathing. Exfoliation is optional and need not be part of every shower. A gentle body scrub such as Lavender Scrub can be an occasional step if your skin tolerates physical exfoliation.
How to make your autumn body ritual gentler
• Check how skin feels: Skip scrubbing if it is itchy, sore or irritated.
• Use warm rather than hot water: Prolonged hot showers can worsen dryness.
• Keep pressure light: There is no reason to scrub until the skin turns pink.
• Finish with moisturiser: Apply it while skin is slightly damp.
• Rest when needed: Taking a break from exfoliation is part of a thoughtful routine.
Skincare can be soft and simple. When a step no longer feels comfortable, you are allowed to leave it out.
